Is Pound-Current updated in the ports collection for FreeBSD?  I tried
downloading and installing the .tgz but couldn't get it to install to my
FreeBSD system when specifying -with-ssl= my openSSL directory.  When I
install the port it does it automatically I suppose because it works
flawlessly.  What am I doing wrong with the make command?

make

Give that a shot.
