alerting admin on failover

Hi,

First, big fan of pound. I have been running it for about almost a year
after exploring a lot of other options (mod_backhand etc). I use it to
load balance among several apache servers running the same perl website.
It's a lifesaver.

Anyway, at some point i was asked why the site was so slow today. Turns
out 1 web server had died! Does anyone do anything clever to alert
themselves via email when pound is skipping over an unresponsive server?
Sorry if there is an obvious solution using pound's log facility.

Thanks,

Jason Kronstat

Message It doesn't seem like that should be in the scope of pound at all.
Using server monitoring software like Netsaint/Nagios to directly check HTTP
services on your backend servers is the best solution for this type of
thing...well IMO ^^

Of course, but Pound should log something, and other monitoring software
or scripts can watch that log to alert an admin.

After a little more consideration, I realize that because I depend on
pound for failover, that doesn't necessarily mean I need to depend on it
to alert me when a server is down. As Mr. Sharrah pointed out, there are
MANY tools that do that. And Pound's very focused scope is one of it's
main selling points.

Thanks for everyone's input, this mailing list is great.
