I was using version 1.7. I went to grab -current and noticed there is no
FreeBSD port file for pound-current. Looks like the FreeBSD port makes some
changes to pound 1.7 regarding threads and sockets. All the 1.7 patches
apply cleanly to -current except patches-pound.c so I will look into what's
amiss there.

Got the FreeBSD port for pound v1.7 hacked up to work right with
pound-current. The failover works very quickly now so that appears to have
been the problem. Thanks!
