Logging and Stand-by servers

Hi all,
my query about logging doesn't seem to have attracted any
comments. Further research on my behalf shows that IIS lets you implement
custom logging by registering a new COM component that implements
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/iissdk/html/22acbbb5-4371-4dd3-b999-9a96b8cc5bee.asp>ILogPlugin

or
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/iissdk/html/de23af27-94c8-4b17-ba00-0fa99d70b618.asp>ILogPluginEx.

I can get one of my guys to look into this, but has anyone already done
this work? Tips, lessons learned or preferably the source would be handy.

I also raised the issue of more intelligent selection of backends based on
the HA check returning a score - no opinions?

I'd like to add a comment about a recent thread to do with fail-over
backends, i.e. backends that aren't used unless all the other backends in
the pool aren't available.
This would be really handy in a hosting situation where the pricing model
differentiated between load balanced sites and non load balanced
sites. The non-load balanced sites could use the fail-over backend to
display a nice "Our site isn't available" message or a mini-site with
static content. This would only be shown if the first machine was down. In
a load balanced scenario it would still provide value if an external system
caused the normal backends to not function (e.g. database server not working).

I'm really liking the system so far but this backend selection stuff seems
to be Pound's weakest area - we've used F5 BigIP's and a another app based
on Natd in the past, all of which provide allot more ability to direct the
traffic.

cheers
JMB
