pound 1.8 - ./configure results in
Missing OpenSSL (-lcrypto) - aborted
Fresh Debian based install (Mepis) w/OpenSSL, libcrypto++5.2, *crypto,
*crypto, etc, etc. /usr/lib has libcrypt.a, libcrypto++.a,
libcrypto++5.2.a. Seems like we're looking for libcrypto.a, but that's
just a guess, creating a symbolic link didn't seem to help. How to check
for libpthead BTW?
Any thoughts?

to successfully build pound on Debian. Please be aware that pound 1.8.2
is included in Debian with revision 1.9 to come today or tomorrow.
