503 errors: Too many open files

Greetings List,

I have a moderately loaded pound setup running several hosts, and have
been having an issue with some 503 errors. When I look in the logs, I
see this:

Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: HTTP accept: Too many open files
Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: backend 10.15.0.51:80 create: Too many open files
Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: HTTP accept: Too many open files
Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: error copy chunk cont: Operation timed out
Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: HTTP accept: Too many open files
Sep 14 12:32:01 fw1 pound: backend 10.15.0.51:80 create: Too many open files

I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting here. What does this
indicate, and how can I fix it?

We're running pound on OpenBSD in the front and Debian with Apache2 on
the backend.

Thank you kindly in advance for any help you can give.

Brian
