stable / experimental release 2.2.x?

(and now from the correct address)

Hey folks,

while asking for 2.2.7 being included in gentoo-linux (2.2 is included
right now) I found out that 2.2.7 is released as "experimental" and the
last "stable" release is 2.2(.0).
The releases in the 2.2.x-tree seem to fix quite some issues therefore
I'm wondering why there's been no stable release since
2.2.
Is there any common scheme you are following between stable and
exeperimental release like 2.2.x is experimental and
2.3.x is stable or how comes that the first 2.2-release has been
declared stable while the subsequent 2.2.x releases are experimental?

Thanks in advance,

thomas

The x.y versions are "stable" (known good at time of release). x.y.z
versions (aka "experimental") are intermediate, between x.y and x.(y +

them usable. Right now the latest stable is 2.2, latest experimental is
2.2.7 and next stable will be 2.3 (almost ready).[...]

Do we have any chance for a change in this area?
As far as I can tell from the changelog there where quite a few bugs
from 2.2.0 fixed in later 2.2.x releases but
these were all marked as experimental.

Maybe a change like:
2.3 is stable all subsequent releases like 2.3.1, 2.3.2 and so on are
bugfix releases only and keep the stable status
2.4 will be the new development branch with new features until a new
stable status has been reached with maybe 2.4.5 or something from which
on all subsequent releases in 2.4.x will be stable releases ... .

I'm simply missing the bugfix releases instead there are the
experimental releases which already have bugfixes but also new features.

Just my 2c.

thomas

Or just use the version schema of apache, gimp and linux kernel before 2.6:
even minor versions are stable releases where the third number represents

The 2.3 series was really quite stable, despite being labeled
experimental. I don't think you have much to worry about when running
it - but that said - be a good admin and always have a plan in case an
upgrade has a bug that affects you!

Plus, how will bugs get fixed / features get tested if people don't try
the experimental branches? :)
